Why should I give up my old mattress? Aren't
all mattresses the same?
Hardly. The innerspring mattress was invented in 1925 and has
remained virtually unchanged since then. Although placing steel
springs inside a quilted pad was far more advanced than stuffing
animal hair or feathers into a bag, the real breakthrough in sleep
science would not happen for another 70 years when Swedish scientists
perfected the NASA-developed TEMPUR® pressure relieving materialTM.
Over the years, people have looked for alternatives to the innerspring
such as foam rubber, waterbeds, futons, and even air mattresses.
However, each force the body into the same unnatural, twisted
and contorted positions. A mattress should do the exact opposite.
It should conform to your shape, not force you to conform to it.
The Tempur-Pedic® mattress does just that. Using
your body heat and mass, it conforms to the exact shape and weight
of your body.
What exactly is the TEMPUR® pressure relieving materialTM?
It is a viscoelastic, open-celled, temperature and weight sensitive
material. Originally developed for NASA in the 1970s, it was designed
to conform to any individual's body and relieve the pressure of
the tremendous G-forces experienced by astronauts during lift-off
and flight. This material was innovative and extremely promising;
however, it proved too difficult (and expensive) to produce in
large quantities for the general public or medical use. It would
not be until 1991 that a Swedish company, Fagerdala World Foams,
would introduce TEMPUR® pressure relieving materialTM, the
vastly improved reinvention of the original NASA formula. After
nearly a decade of extensive research, their painstaking efforts
were finally a success. The result: a higher density, more reactive,
more affordable and much more durable space-age material.
Is TEMPUR® pressure relieving materialTM different
from foam?
TEMPUR® pressure relieving materialTM is viscoelastic and
made up of billions of spherical shaped, open cells that are temperature
and weight sensitive. Visco - resistant to change of shape; Elastic
- able to return to its original shape after being forced to change.
This viscoelastic property, along with the material's temperature
sensitivity, allows it to become softer in warmer areas (where
your body is making the most contact with the surface) and remain
firmer in cooler areas (where less body contact is being made).
Therefore, TEMPUR® pressure relieving materialTM is able to
conform to any body shape or size, even the hard to reach lumbar
area of your back. Regular foam is not as sensitive to temperature
and, although it is elastic (not viscoelastic), it stretches and
contorts when placed under pressure. Instead of changing shape,
the cells of TEMPUR® material actually shift position to conform
to your body's unique characteristics. By absorbing and evenly
distributing your body weight over the entire surface, the material
is able to virtually eliminate the pressure points that cause
you to toss and turn. In fact, it has been clinically proven to
reduce tossing and turning by more than 70%.
How does the TEMPUR® pressure relieving materialTM
differ from other products claiming to be viscoelastic?
Simple. In most cases, those other products have a much lower
density, are not as sensitive to your body temperature, are typically
too soft to provide any therapeutic support, and do not have the
endorsement of thousands of medical professionals around the world.
TEMPUR® pressure relieving materialTM has a density of 5.34
lb/ft3, helping to make it much more durable than others having
densities of no more than 3.8 lb/ft3. Other products more closely
resemble the original formula developed by NASA and lack the important
improvements made by Fagerdala of Sweden in both durability and
performance. We are so confident in the quality of our mattresses
that we offer an industry leading 20-year limited warranty. As
if that's not enough... NASA was so impressed with our improvements
to their viscoelastic material, they presented us with an award
saying so.
Isn't it better for you to sleep on a hard mattress?
Absolutely not. A hard, nonconforming surface forces your body
to adapt to its flat shape, bending your spine into an unnatural
(and uncomfortable) position. The result: lower back pain and
less restful sleep. This conventional surface also creates pressure
points at the shoulders, hips, and feet, which can cause you to
toss and turn trying to find a more comfortable position. On a
hard mattress, there simply isn't a more comfortable position.
Will the body molding of the TEMPUR® pressure relieving
materialTM make me hot and sweaty or cut off my circulation?
On the contrary. The open-celled physical structure of the TEMPUR®
pressure relieving materialTM is self-ventilating. Air is able
to travel throughout the material and actually dissipate body
heat, therefore eliminating the need for special channels or vents.
By eliminating counter pressure, blood flows freely throughout
your body without harmful capillary compression and restriction
caused by pressure points. Our products are currently used by
thousands of medical facilities around the world to help prevent
and cure pressure ulcers that are caused by counter pressure,
perspiration, and/or poor circulation.
Is there a breaking-in or adjustment period associated
with your product?
We find that most of our customers are very comfortable the very
first night. Others may need a few nights to get used to the increased
support they experience in their lumbar or lower-back area. Some
Tempur-Pedic® sleepers may experience a gradual
softening of their mattress or pillow within the first few weeks
of use. This could result because the "windows" of some
cells may not completely open during the manufacturing and curing
process. As the material cures, most of the cells will open up,
but some remain closed until you actually use your mattress or
pillow. Once all of the cells are open, air will be able to enter
and leave the product more easily - resulting in a seemingly "softer"
or more responsive surface. However, the density and other supportive
characteristics of the TEMPUR® pressure relieving materialTM
remain the same.
Sounds great. But I need a little more proof.
Very well. Perhaps the most convincing proof can be seen in the
skyrocketing popularity of our products. Since our humble beginnings
in 1991, our products have been featured on Dateline NBC, CNN’s
Business Unusual, CNBC’s Power Lunch, the Discovery Channel
and NBC’s Today Show. If that isn’t enough, there
have been multiple scientific studies, including one at the University
of Maine, to document the miracle-like results of sleeping on
the Tempur-Pedic® mattress.
What did those research studies reveal?
Computer mapping using a pressure-monitoring pad with hundreds
of individual sensors shows that the Tempur-Pedic®
mattress virtually eliminates potentially harmful pressure points.
These same pressure points can cause you discomfort and a seemingly
endless night of tossing and turning. Sleep clinic studies indicate
that the Tempur-Pedic® mattress cuts the average
nighttime tossing and turning by more than 70%! Reports from some
of the thousands of medical professionals using Tempur-Pedic®
v products reflect positive results for patients suffering
from lower-back pain, headaches, stiff neck, sciatica, painful
hip joints, insomnia, and other sleep ailments.
Does the Tempur-Pedic® mattress require
any special care or protective pad?
None whatsoever. And, unlike conventional mattresses, it never
needs to be turned or rotated. The TEMPUR® pressure relieving
material'sTM molecular structure has a permanent memory that helps
it return to its original shape time after time. Our anti-mite
and anti-allergy treated terry cover protects the TEMPUR®
material and is zippered on all four sides for easy removal and
washing. Tempur-Pedic® 's cover is so advanced
that it eliminates the need for conventional mattress pads altogether.
Can Tempur-Pedic® products help reduce
the effects of allergies?
Tempur-Pedic® products are 100% CFC-free and allergy
resistant. Tempur-Pedic® mattresses and pillows
feature our treated terry cover that helps make them resistant
to bacteria, mold, mildew, mites, and odor-causing germs.
Is the Tempur-Pedic® Swedish MattressTM
truly affordable?
Yes. The Tempur-Pedic® mattress is priced about
the same as most other top-of-the-line products. The price of
a queen-size premium innerspring or adjustable air mattress can
range from $1,200 to $1,500 with some exceeding $2,000. Tempur-Pedic®
's financing option makes it easy for you to begin sleeping
the best sleep of your life right now!
Can I return the mattress if I don’t like it?
Absolutely. We want you to experience the Tempur-Pedic®
